Are You Looking For A Brain-Based Therapy?
How does EMDR work?
EMDR therapists believe that your brain has everything it needs to heal - EMDR therapy is a way to access that healing.
Identifying Events that Cause Distress
One of the first steps of EMDR therapy is to identify events that cause distress and identify the beliefs you have about that events. Sometimes people feel unhelpful and inaccurate beliefs like “I should have done something,” “I have to be perfect,” or “I cannot trust anyone.” There are many other beliefs that people may have about past events, and these beliefs can be explored with EMDR Therapy in Indianapolis.
Bilateral Stimulation
EMDR therapy uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. Therapists often use eye movements to facilitate the bilateral stimulation, but you may also be asked to use your hands to tap each arm or leg at a pace that your therapist determines. These eye movements, or tapping, mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep. REM sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life. By using bilateral stimulation, your therapist can help you to access this natural healing process while you are fully awake and alert in session.
EMDR Therapy Helps The Brain Reprocess Memories
EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories in such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of traumas, childhood abuse, and/or neglect. For a more detailed explanation, please visit the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).
EMDR can help you release what no longer serves you.

Common questions about EMDR therapy
What exactly do I have to do during EMDR therapy?
There are 8 phases of EMDR therapy. You will spend time learning more about EMDR and assessing whether it is right for you, learning strategies for coping with emotions, developing a plan to focus on in EMDR, reprocessing the event, and strengthening new/positive beliefs. You can read more detail about each phase in the EMDRIA 8 Phases Guide.
Is EMDR the same as hypnosis?
No, not at all. EMDR is not related to hypnosis. You are always alert/awake during EMDR sessions and can stop the process at any point in time.
How long will I need EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is not a “quick fix” although many people do experience progress at a faster rate than traditional talk therapy. In-Person or Online EMDR therapy in Indianapolis may take one or several sessions to process one traumatic event (or distressing memory).
You deserve freedom from the past.
